Jesuit priests are banned from the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
May 26, 1647
General Court takes the action because of its objection to Catholicism and because of the order’s French background and its success at converting Native Americans in Canada to Catholicism. The law also calls for expelled Jesuits who return to be put to death, except those who “shalbe cast uppon our shores by shippwrack or other accydent.” The law remains in effect until 1700.
